[edit]From Middle Dutch gerijf, gerief. Possibly derived from Middle Dutch rive, rieve (“abundant, mild”) with the prefix ge-, from uncertain origin. Possibly ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rībaz (“generous, abundant”) and related to Lithuanian riebus (“fat”).
