Etymology

From Middle High German grūsam, grūwesam, equivalent to grauen +‎ -sam. Compare English gruesome, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Danish and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Norwegian grusom (horrible), and Dutch gruwzaam (gruesome; cruel). Related to ergrausen (to frighten).
