Etymology

ho- (space, area, things) + -di- (oral) + -∅- (3rd person subject prefix) + -d- (classifier)-ní (neuter imperfective stem of root -NIID, “to say”).

Like with (“he says”), di- deletes in the third person, but only optionally: hodiʼní.
