From Proto-Germanic *harduz, whence also Old English heard, Old Frisian herd, Old Saxon hard, Old Dutch hart, Old High German hart, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐍂𐌳𐌿𐍃 (hardus). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kert-, *kret- (“strong; powerful”).
