[edit]From Malay hijau, from Classical Malay hijau, from Proto-Malayic *hijaw, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)qizaw. The sense “inexperienced” is a semantic loan from Dutch groentje. The sense “environmentally friendly” is a semantic loan from English green.
