A Latinized spelling from Old Galician-Portuguese yno (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin hymnus, borrowed from Ancient Greek ὕμνος (húmnos), from Proto-Indo-European *sh₂em- (“sing”).

Borrowed from Spanish himno, but with the silent ⟨h⟩ pronounced as /h/ due to English influence (compare alkohol, hedonismo, Hispanismo, Hinduismo, homiliya, nihilismo, rehabilitasyon) or by pronouncing the Spanish unadapted borrowing with Tagalog orthography rules. Attested since the 1980's.
