horned owl (plural horned owls)

  1. An owl of the genus Bubo native to the Americas, among the largest types of owl, having two horn-like tufts of feathers on its head.

Usage notes[edit]

The Eurasian species of Bubo are called eagle owls. The Arctic snowy owl is found both in the Old and the New World.
