  1. The number assigned to a particular house to distinguish it from other buildings on the same street.
  2. The physical representation of this number (for example, affixed to the door or painted on a mailbox).

Usage notes

When a street address is affixed to a building rather than painted on it, the individual devices which are used to affix an address on a structure singularly, or in combination, are called a "house number" even if the device(s) is (are) attached to a commercial building rather than actually on a house.
