From Ancient Greek ΙΧΘΥΣ (IKhThUS, fish), which also served (repurposed) as an acronym (ΙΧΘΥΣ (IKhThUS)) for Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, θεοῦ υἱός, σωτήρ (Iēsoûs Khristós, theoû huiós, sōtḗr, Jesus Christ, son of God, saviour).
