Cognate of French impanation. From Latin impanatus, a form of the verb impanare (to impanate); from im- (in) + panis (bread).

  1. (Christianity) The actual, substantial presence of the body of Christ with the bread and wine of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper — as opposed to transubstantiation.
