Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *incalciāre, *incalceāre, from Latin calx (heel). Compare Catalan and Portuguese encalçar, Spanish encalzar, Occitan encauçar.

  1. (transitive) To chase, to follow closely, to be hot on somebody's heels, to ply, to press.
  2. (intransitive) but takes avere as auxiliary To be imminent, to be pressing, to urge.
