Galician

Etymology

From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese yrto (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), either from Latin hīrtus (hairy, shaggy), or from Vulgar Latin *erctus, from ērectus, perfect participle of ērigō. Cognate with Portuguese hirto, Spanish yerto, Catalan ert and Italian erto.
