From Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃- (to know), *ǵn̥néh₃-. Cognate with Ashokan Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀦𑀢𑀺 (jānati).
