From Old Frisian katte (cognates include Föhr-Amrum North Frisian kaat and West Frisian kat), from Late Latin cattus (domestic cat), from Latin catta, from Afroasiatic; see English cat.

From Old Swedish kāter, from Old Norse kátr of unknown origin. Cognate with Danish kåd, Norwegian Bokmål kåt and Norwegian Nynorsk kåt. Possibly also related to Latin gaudeō (I rejoice).
