[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Lithuanian karãlius, itself a borrowing from Belarusian каро́ль (karólʹ), ultimately from the name of Charlemagne (cf. Latin Carolus, German Karl, Karol). Introduced by Atis Kronvalds in 1870. It soon became popular, possibly because of its similarity with Russian король (korolʹ, “king”) and its apparent connection to karš (“war”), and mostly replaced the earlier Germanism ķēniņš.[1]
