From Middle Breton carat (recorded in the Catholicon), from Proto-Brythonic *karɨd, from Proto-Celtic *kareti (to love), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂- (to desire, wish). Cognate with Cornish kara and Welsh caru.
