Etymology
[edit]Probably borrowed from Kipchak [script needed] (kataγan, “common chicory; endive”) and Yakut [script needed] (kı̈tı̈an, “common juniper”), from Old Turkic [script needed] (*qat, “berry”) + [script needed] (-γan, nominal suffix). Compare also Turkmen [script needed] (gataŋŋir, “a particular plant”), Tatar [script needed] (qatı̈rgan, “hawthorn”) (dialectal), Kyrgyz [script needed] (qatrang, “a particular berry plant”) (dialectal).
