[edit]From Middle High German kibelen, kipeln, kibeln, kippeln, kebeln, iterative of Middle High German kīben, from Old High German *kīban, from Proto-West Germanic *kīban (“to quarrel”). Cognate with German keppeln, kibbeln and keifen, Alemannic German kebbeln, Dutch kijven, Old Norse kífa.
