[edit]kera (“with, alongside”) + -ke, i.e. "a sound that comes alongside (something else)" (compare consonant from Latin cōnsonāns (literally “sounding with (something else)”)). Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot in 1837.
