Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Calque of Swedish kyrkherre; kirkko (“church”) + herra (“master, lord”). Some sources claim the term is a mistranslation of Swedish kyrkoherde (“vicar”, literally “church shepherd”), but that term is more likely a later alteration of kyrkherre.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]kirkkoherra
- parish priest (Catholic, UK), pastor (Lutheran; Catholic, US); parson, rector, vicar (Anglican) (main priest serving a parish)
Usage notes
[edit]- Kirkkoherra is a middle ranking Finnish church official of higher rank than a pappi (“priest, preacher”) but below the rank of piispa (“bishop”).
- The English equivalents for kirkkoherra vary widely by the country and congregation and same title may be used to mean different positions in different churches.
