From Malay kubis, from Portuguese couves, plural form of couve, from Old Galician-Portuguese couve, from earlier *coue, from Latin caulis, caulem (“stem of a cabbage”), from Ancient Greek καυλός (kaulós, “stem”). Doublet of kol.
