Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *kumpu, from Proto-Uralic *kumpe (“elevation, hillock”), whence also Erzya кумбо (kumbo, “hummock”), Moksha комба (komba, “hump”) and Proto-Samic *kompë. Contains a -u suffix which is not seen in the earlier derivation kumpare. The Finnic root was earlier compared with Proto-Germanic *humpaz (whence English hump), but their similarity must be regarded as coincidental.
