Etymology 1[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *kurkku (compare Estonian, Livonian, and Veps kurk), borrowed from Proto-Norse [script needed] (*kwerku), from Proto-Germanic *kwerkō (compare Old Norse kverk, Swedish Kvarken), and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (“to devour”) (compare Erzya кирьга (kirʹga)[1]).
