From an older adjective lass, laß (“languid, slothful, idle, weary”), from Old High German laz (“slow, sluggish”), from Proto-Germanic *lataz (“slow, weary”), from Proto-Indo-European *lad- (“slow, weary”). Akin to Old English læt (“slow, slack, lax, late”) (English late), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐍄𐍃 (lats, “sluggish, weary”), Latin lassus (“tired”). More at late.
