Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *-lɛːmʔ (to lick), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)liəmʔ ~ *(c)limʔ (to lick); cognate with Khasi jylliem and Bolyu /ljim³¹/. Compare also Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ljam (tongue; flame) (whence Chinese (tiǎn)).
