From Middle French mesme, from Old French mesme, earlier medesme or medisme and meïsme, from Vulgar Latin *metipsimus, from Latin -met + ipse + -issimus. Cognates include Bourguignon moîme, Spanish mismo, Portuguese mesmo and Italian medesimo.
