The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., from Late Latin mattia or Vulgar Latin *mattea, probably from Latin mateola, from Proto-Indo-European *mat (hoe, plow). Compare Occitan massa, Spanish maza, Portuguese maça, French masse, Italian mazza.
