margin of victory (plural margins of victory)

  1. (countable) Difference in score between the winner of a competition and the second-place finisher.
  2. (countable) Difference in score between the winner of a competition and the number of votes needed to win, generally fifty percent. Also referred to as the absolute margin of victory or as w:excess votes.
