Etymology
mit (“with”) + Kind (“child”) + und (“and”) + Kegel (“illegitimate child”). Hence, the expression originally means "with all [their] legitimate and illegitimate children", i.e. with a large entourage. However, this meaning is inscrutable to the contemporary German speaker because the word Kegel is now obsolete in the aforementioned sense.
