13th century. From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese mõesteiro (monastery) (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin monistērium from Late Latin monastērium (monastery, monk's cell), from Ancient Greek μοναστήριον (monastḗrion, hermit's cell), from μόνος (mónos, alone).
