From Arabic مُجَاهِد ‎(mujāhid), derived from the active participle of جَاهَدَ ‎(jāhada, to strive in the cause of God) (verbal noun: جِهَاد ‎(jihād, to strive in the cause of God as a religious duty)), from the root ج ه د ‎(j-h-d).
