From Arabic مُجَاهِد (mujāhid), derived from the active participle of جَاهَدَ (jāhada, to strive in the cause of God) (verbal noun: جِهَاد (jihād, to strive in the cause of God as a religious duty)), from the root ج ه د (j-h-d).
