from Latin onager (“wild ass”), from Hellenistic Ancient Greek ὄναγρος (ónagros, “wild ass”), from ὄνος (ónos, “ass”) + ἄγριος (ágrios, “wild”) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros). War machine sense due to its kicking action, similar to that of the ass.
