Etymology

20th century coinage. Compound of Middle Dutch ooy (“ait, island, wetland”) +‎ bos (“forest”), the former being derived from Proto-Germanic *awjō and identical to the toponym Ooij. Unrelated to modern ooi (“ewe”).
