Etymology

First attested in 1475. Inherited from Old Spanish piçarra, from Basque, further derivation uncertain.

  • Perhaps from Basque *lapitz-arri (literally slate stone), from lapitz (slate) +‎ arri (stone), with initial la- misinterpreted as the feminine singular article la.[1]
  • Perhaps from Basque *pitzarri, blend of pitzatu (to break into pieces) +‎ arri (stone).[1]
