plague cross (plural plague crosses)

  1. (historical) A cross marked on a building occupied by victims of plague, as a warning of contagion.
  2. (historical) A stone structure set up outside the established market areas in time of plague, allowing town and country dwellers to trade with one another while supposedly minimising the risk of contagion.
