Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from pompoen (“pumpkin”) or pompel (“big, swollen”) + limoes, a variant of limoen modeled after Portuguese limões (“citrus, lemons”). Another explanation is a gradual corruption of Portuguese pomos limões (“citrus fruit”).
