Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from pompoen (pumpkin) or pompel (big, swollen) + limoes, a variant of limoen modeled after Portuguese limões (citrus, lemons). Another explanation is as gradual corruption of Portuguese pomo limões (citrus fruit).[1]
