Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Italian puttanesca (feminine of puttanesco, literally “whorish, sluttish”), from puttana (“whore”).

Etymology[edit]
From puttanesco (“whorish”). Sometimes claimed to have been invented in a whorehouse, or that the name is from puttanata (“stupidity”), according to an account where Sandro Petti is identified as the inventor of the sauce.
