Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *p-seːʔ. Compare Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects tấy and Pacoh pixay.
Shorto (2006) noted a possible connection with Proto-Mon-Khmer *bheʔ[1]; Blench (2018) considered Vietic *p-seːʔ closest to the original form, given other reflexes' long vowels and final glottal; addtionally, Blench suggested medial fricative /s/ was weakened to /h/.[2].
