From Proto-Celtic *rowdos (compare Welsh rhudd), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (compare Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός ‎(eruthrós), Sanskrit रुधिर ‎(rudhirá), Old English rēad).
