Shorto (2006: 522) relates this to Vietnamese rải and propose for both a native Austroasiatic origin.

Meanwhile, Baxter and Sagart (2014: 57, 187) propose that this is

    non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (SV: sái), specifically borrowed from Old Chinese (OC *Cə.s<r>ərʔ-s), for which they reconstruct *Cə.s- to account for Vietnamese high-register tone and ‹r-›.
