Inherited from Malay رانچڠ (rancang, “peg; to plan, to prepare”), from Javanese ꦫꦚ꧀ꦕꦁ (rancang, “to set up, to assemble; to design; to draw; to estimate”), from Old Javanese rañcaṅ (“frame (bodywork)”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *rcaŋ (“to prick, to pierce, to insert; rack, framework”).

• The sense of to plan, to prepare is reinforced by semantic loan from Javanese ꦫꦚ꧀ꦕꦁ (rancang, “to set up, to assemble; to design, to draw; to estimate”).
