From Middle High German rechenen, from Old High German rehhanōn (akin to Old Saxon *rekenen), from Proto-Germanic *rekanōną. Compare Hunsrik rechne, Low German rekenen, Dutch rekenen and English reckon. Indirectly derived from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ-.
