Etymology[edit]
From Malay sanggah, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saŋgaq (“to arrest the progress of something by stopping or catching it; to support, keep from falling”). Doublet of sangga.
- Semantic loan from Balinese ᬲᬗ᭄ᬕᬄ (sanggah, “altar”, literally “seat, throne”) for Balinese family shrine.
