Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *excappāre or *excapāre, present active infinitives of *excappō, *excapō, from ex- + Late Latin cappa (cloak). Compare Aromanian scap, scãpari, Italian scappare, French échapper, Catalan, Occitan, and Spanish escapar, Romansch scappar.
