From Vulgar Latin *excappāre or *excapāre, present active infinitives of *excappō, *excapō, from Latin ex- + cappa (cloak). Compare French échapper, Catalan, Portuguese, and Spanish escapar, Romanian scăpa, Romansch scappar.
