From Proto-Germanic *skadwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *skotwōs. Cognate with Old High German scato (German Schatten), Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌳𐌿𐍃 (skadus). The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek σκότος (skótos), Proto-Celtic *skāton (Irish scáth, Breton squeut).
