From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English schipman, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English scipmann (shipman, mariner, sailor, rower; one who goes on trading voyages; pirate), equivalent to ship +‎ man. Cognate with Icelandic skipmaður, skipamaður (shipman).
