Etymology

From Middle English sylveren, selverne, from Old English silfren, seolfren, seolfern (silvern), from Proto-Germanic *silubrīnaz (made of silver); equivalent to silver +‎ -(e)n. Cognate with Dutch zilveren (silvern), German silbern (silvern).
