Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from German Sklave, from Medieval Latin sclavus (“slave”), ultimately from Byzantine Greek Σκλάβος (Sklábos, “Slav”). Compare English slave, French esclave, Spanish esclavo, Italian schiavo, Yiddish שקלאַף (shklaf). Doublet of slavo and ĉaŭ.
